The UBC Museum of Anthropology<\/strong><\/a> is\u00a0a peaceful haven open to\u00a0the world. This museum is perched on\u00a0the western edge\u00a0of Vancouver, located within the\u00a0University of British Columbia campus. On Point Grey cliffs, at the border of\u00a0the Sea of Salish\u00a0and surrounded by the forest, this place of knowledge and discovery brings together collections of nearly 535,000 ethnographic objects, including 6000 textiles from all over\u00a0the world: South Pacific countries, Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, and\u00a0especially North America.
\nThe hall is devoted to the impressive Northwestern First Nations woodwork<\/strong>. It combines carving and painting\u00a0techniques, to build\u00a0canoes and totem signs in a unique and spectacular\u00a0style showcasing\u00a0a natural world\u00a0of\u00a0spirits\u00a0and wild animals.<\/p>\n

To show the ethnographic collections, the MOA opens its storage\u00a0to the public with the Multiversity Galleries (Ways of Knowing)<\/strong>. These exhibition galleries offer a privileged access to thousands of items patiently collected by the museum since its creation in 1976: an exceptional diversity of craft pieces (pottery, basketry, clothing, belts, bags, jewelry, masks …) representative of a variety of ethnic groups worldwide. Making the museum a sensory and interactive experience has been a successful achievement. Thanks to an innovative digital catalogue\u00a0available on site\u00a0or online, you can research\u00a0artifacts, view high resolution images, learn more about their origins, materials and making techniques, and finally locate them precisely in the galleries. In windows, on shelves, in the drawers of custom-made cabinets, these remarkable ethnographic objects are\u00a0put back\u00a0into the museum space,\u00a0and made accessible to visitors who therefore become more\u00a0active in the process.
\nThese galleries provide a\u00a0prominent place to the different\u00a0native groups\u00a0from the North Coast\u2013Kwakwaka’wakw, Nisga’a, Gitxsan, Haida, Tlingit or Coast Salish<\/strong>\u2013\u00a0along with their rich textile production: blankets and curtains, ceremonial capes woven in goat wool or cedar bark fibers, leggings, moccasins and belts …
\nOne definitely\u00a0feels a strong commitment in\u00a0respecting the values and beliefs of each community, working in close collaboration with the makers\u00a0in the exhibition\u00a0of their work and their identity.<\/p>\n

Nexus of dialogue and encounter, the museum boasts a different approach in the representation of material culture and anthropology. The textile arts of the First Nations of\u00a0the region are the expression of unique traditions, privileged witnesses of ancestral rites which are\u00a0necessary to keep alive.<\/p>\n
