CAMBODIA : land of silk and cotton

Overcoming a complex history, Cambodians have kept exceptional crafts.

You just need to go visit the Angkor civilization temples and have a look at the wonderful work of bas-relief, the precision and refinement of these lace stones, to understand that Cambodians have an extraordinary sense of handicraft talent. Stone carving, silver and finally weaving … This is the country of Krama, a check woven cotton but also of the most extraordinary ikats, the “hôl” in Khmer. Cambodia is the second destination of the digital travel World Textile & Artisans.

In February 2012, I have been on a road trip in the country to meet local actors involved in the rehabilitation of Cambodian textile know-how. Reviving these traditional techniques has a social and ethical purpose, to promote inter-generational transmission, fight against rural exodus and improve the lives of families by providing them a steady income. We will discover how to make natural dyes, the rebirth of golden silk or the complexities and splendor of traditional ikat weaving … Discover there the landscapes and sensations of Cambodia and the textiles stories below.
